Martel Theresa Bishop

Martel Theresa Bishop, a native of the westside of Chicago arrived in Los Angeles at age 24 with 3 little boys and daughter 5 months in the womb. Her 2000 mile bus ride beganas an effort to escape an abusive relationship and provide a better life for her children.

Martels childhood friend, Edna Brown had relocated with her family to Los Angeles when they were 13, so they hadn't seen each other in 11 years, but because of her circumstances Enda encouraged her to make the journey; one of the craziest, best decisions she feels she ever made. But it wasn't easy out here alone, single parent, only one friend, no family so after 3 years of being in California, she was given the opportunity to be still and get to ask questions about the God who she felt didn't care about her.

Martel and her children went to stay in a shelter for women, she knew God really did love her and that she would get an opportunity to help people the way she had been helped. Still unsettled she moved back and forth from Chicago to Los Angeles, with her children. God always opened doors for good jobs with benefits.

In Chicago she worked at Jewel Food Store and as a Customer Service Rep/Billing Coordinator at Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation/Northwestern Hospital in Chicago twice, and in California, Compton Cable, PageNet Inc., Paychex Inc., as a Customer Service Representative and then KCI, Computing Inc. and Brickstone Real estate Development company as Executive Assistant. Serving others came natural to Martel so she excelled in every position.

Martel reconnected with her good friend Reverend Lis Meggs and brought her kind spirit to Los Angeles Third Church for Spiritual Living as the Office Manger/Administration Assistant.

However Martel's service to the church and the surrounding community far exceeds the title she was given. She has been responsible for outreach initiatives such as LA Third Church "Blessing Board", their food and clothes exchange, and "Affirmation Blankets" for local seniors, supported by Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Martel's desire to help young people become mentally, physically, spiritually and socially healthy, resulted in forming an alliance with Room 116, and Los Angeles Third Church. Room 116 is a group of millennials that provide a safe alcohol and drug free space for healing the heart and mind. Martel's goal in life is to provide unconditional love and support to everyone.

Martel is the matriarch of her family; her adopted parents are deceased, and no other living blood relatives are known. She is the proud Mother of Peter,Robert,Paul and Rena Bishop and between the 4 of them have filled her life with 12 beautiful grandchildren, all in California.

Martel's favorite Scripture:

"But the fruit of the

Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,  faithfulness, gentleness and

self-control." Galatians 5:22-23

Martel's favorite quote: "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometimes."
